Here in Virginia, camping is one of our all-time favorite activities. Whether that means pitching a tent in the woods, checking into a luxurious “glampground,” or setting up with the whole crew in a family campground, there’s truly no wrong way to spend a night under the stars. Speaking of stars, you may not have realized that Virginia is home to a couple of designated Dark Sky Parks: areas where there is so little light pollution that the night sky can be seen in all of its glory.
One designated Dark Sky Park in Virginia is Staunton River State Park, a beautiful destination that offers unforgettable camping and year-round cabin rentals.
Welcome to Staunton River State Park! Less than 30 miles from the North Carolina border, this beautiful property measures nearly 2,500 acres and showcases beautiful views of both the Dan and Staunton rivers.

When it comes to recreational opportunities, Staunton River is one of the best. Hiking and self-guided trails, camping, biking, horseback riding, swimming, fishing, boating, and even disc golf are available to visitors.

And while there’s a ton to explore during the day, the real magic happens after sunset.

In July 2015, Staunton River State Park was designated as the 25th International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association. For this reason, the park is host to some impressive stargazing events, fondly known as “star parties.”

Stargazing sessions are held regularly throughout the summer months; however, there are also special astronomical events you can attend throughout the year.

There’s also a field next to the visitor’s center where night sky enthusiasts can stargaze year-round. After setting up your tent at the designated campground or settling into your cabin, it’s hard to imagine a better way to end the day than stargazing at Stanton River State Park.
