Indiana has more than its share of rumored hauntings and paranormal activity. But if you ask anyone about the most haunted small town in the Hoosier State, you’re likely to get one answer: Mitchell Indiana.

Mitchell is a charming little city in Lawrence County with a population of less than 4,500 people.

Chris Flook / Wikipedia At first glance, you might wonder why a small city this adorable could possibly be haunted.

But step away from the charming main streets, and you’ll realize that this sleepy little town is home to a place that the Travel Channel called the 4th Most Terrifying Place in America.

Whispers Estate / Facebook We’re talking, of course, about Whispers Estate.

Whispers Estate was constructed at the turn of the 20th century and was purchased by Dr. John and Jessie Gibbons.

Noah Sosh / Google The couple adopted several orphaned children, but unfortunately, they did not get a happy ending.

Rumor has it that one of the couple’s adopted children, Rachael, started a fire in the front parlor that burned her to death.

Whispers Estate / Facebook A 10-month-old little girl, Elizabeth, later died in the master bedroom of unknown causes. Mrs. Gibbons also died here from double pneumonia (and from grief, some say).

The list of scary encounters here is a mile long. Some see poor Rachael running around the house, while others can smell baby powder from sweet little Elizabeth.

Tim Miller / Google The house is most well-known for the “whispering walls” and rattling doorknobs, and those who have dared to sleep in the master bedroom have often woken up from uncontrollable coughing. Some even claim to have phantom scratches on their bodies when they leave. Dr. Gibbons was a prominent doctor in town, so dozens of his patients died inside the home as well.

We’re willing to admit that the rumors of Whispers Estate being haunted could be false, but we’re not willing to spend the night and find out.

Mitchell Indiana September 23, 2022 Melanie J. Besides Whispers Estate, are there more haunted places in Mitchell Indiana? Indiana is filled with lots of haunted places. And one of the most haunted is Whispers Estate. The stories of the dead orphans and patients are terrifying and will keep you up at night. Though Mitchell isn’t known to have many other haunted places, there are certainly other places in Indiana that are just as bone-chilling. They include the Central State Hospital in Indianapolis. Built in 1848, this psychiatric hospital housed mentally ill and criminally insane people. And rumor has it, the patients were treated awfully; some committed suicide on the property, while others died of mysterious circumstances. It is said that the remains of many patients who passed away were buried on the property. Some former staff reported hearing screams coming from various sections of the building and reported seeing shadows as well as witnessing paranormal activity. The hospital was finally closed in 1994 but has remained a hot spot for curious paranormal enthusiasts. Other haunted places in Indiana include the Old Blackford County Jail and the Highland Lawn Cemetery. You can read more about them in our article explaining why Indiana might just be the most haunted place in America.  What are some activities to do in Mitchell Indiana? While Mitchell Indiana is famously known for Whispers Estate, there is another attraction that has visitors flocking to the charming town. And that is Spring Mill State Park, and it’s one of the most beautiful parks in the Hoosier State. The park is dedicated to the preservation of pioneer living and there is so much to do and see. This 1,300-acre haven has a pioneer village, a memorial, a nature center, caves, mills, waterfalls, and a natural spring flowing through the park. And you can camp, hike, tour the caves, swim, and so much more. This gorgeous park is definitely worthy of your bucket list. You can read more about Spring Mill State Park in our previous article. Along with the park, you must visit Carousel Winery. It’s a hidden gem where you can spend an afternoon sampling wine and admiring the views of the rolling hills of the countryside. Be sure to plan a day trip to see these two gems in Mitchell Indiana.
