The town of Waynesville is known as the Gateway to the Smokies. It was founded in 1810, and by 1880… had 225 residents. Today, it’s the largest North Carolina town west of Asheville. The current population is right around 10,000 residents.

Whatever you do, don’t leave town without a stop at the Museum of North Carolina Handicrafts located within the historic Shelton House. The restored house is a testament to the early settlement days of Waynesville, and the arts and crafts found inside the museum are lovely.
