The town of Waynesville is known as the Gateway to the Smokies. It was founded in 1810, and by 1880… had 225 residents. Today, it’s the largest North Carolina town west of Asheville. The current population is right around 10,000 residents.

From general stores, bookstores, bakeries, a chocloate shop, restaurants and more, there really is something for everyone. The Olde Brick House, shown above and below, is a favorite among locals and visitors. You’ll find a unique blend of Colonial and primitive furnishings and decor here.

In recent decades, the historic district has seen a major revitalization, and the hard work shows in every delightful little detail you’ll see as you stroll the streets.

Whatever you do, don’t leave town without a stop at the Museum of North Carolina Handicrafts located within the historic Shelton House. The restored house is a testament to the early settlement days of Waynesville, and the arts and crafts found inside the museum are lovely.

Hungry? Of course, a town like Waynesville has some top-notch eateries! For the best BBQ around, head to Haywood Smoke House. Enjoy that unseasonably cool mountain air outside on the patio, or if it’s too chilly, then sit inside.
