Waterfalls in any setting are mesmerizing. The sheer power of the flowing water can leave you awestruck and entranced. It’s no suprise that you often find yourself searching the internet for the search term “waterfalls near me.”
It’s also no wonder that the various waterfalls scattered throughout Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming are such popular attractions. Marking them on a map of the park, you could easily fill several days on a waterfall scavenger hunt. When you hit the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, you’re in for a treat and a bonus: there are three waterfalls cascading along the Yellowstone River there, and they’re absolutely breathtaking. The hikes above the river to view these falls are, without a doubt, some of the very best waterfall hikes in Wyoming. Read on to learn more.
The mighty Yellowstone River is the powerful force that carved out the awesome natural wonder that is the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

Over time, as the river flowed, it wore away at the rock which gradually became less resistant. This is the phenomenon that created not one, but three spectacular falls that fascinate visitors to the canyon today.

The Upper Falls of the Yellowstone River in Wyoming is the first cascade flowing down the canyon. The water plunges 109 feet over a rock ledge and continues on its way downstream.

The second waterfall along the Yellowstone River is Crystal Falls. Tumbling down 129 feet, it’s taller than the upper falls, though it’s a not quite as forceful. Crystal Falls is actually an outfall from Cascade Creek, feeding into the Yellowstone River right there in the canyon.

The last waterfall in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is certainly not the least beautiful. Plunging more than 300 feet, the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone in Wyoming is not only the tallest in the canyon, but is the tallest in all of Yellowstone National Park — it’s even over twice as tall as Niagara Falls!

There are several vantage points throughout the canyon where you can get a good look at all of the falls individually. Viewing platforms have been constructed at the Upper and Lower Falls, and Crystal Falls is visible just east of the Uncle Tom area on the South Rim Trail.

A mighty river, a grand canyon, and three spectacular waterfalls — that’s a whole lot of awesome packed into just one little slice of an amazing national park.
