In far northern Wisconsin, there’s an old iron bridge that seems a little out of place in the Northwoods. Ornate and beautiful, it looks like something you might find in an urban park in Europe. You’ll find this remarkable bridge tucked into the heart of Bayfield and it’s a destination worth seeking out. Lace up your hiking shoes – here’s the trail that ventures under – and over – the Old Iron Bridge.
The bridge is located right in Bayfield, pop. 487, the city with the smallest population in Wisconsin. It’s located in Bayfield county and it’s called the Gateway to the Apostle Islands. Just blocks from Bayfield’s little downtown and the waterfront, you’ll find the Iron Bridge Trail.

There’s a small parking area on Washington Avenue that you can use to reach the trail. The hike to the trail is relatively short, but a nice way to stretch your legs when you’re in Bayfield.

The trail travels up a wooden ravine, under the Old Iron Bridge, which towers 50 feet above the ravine’s floor. The trail follows a creek and travels through the trees. The area feels wild but it once was the location of a ballpark and cattle used to be kept here.

The bridge is a marvel of early engineering above this rugged ravine. The wrought iron bridge was built by Wausau Iron Works in 1912. The bridge used to carry cars but it was closed to vehicles in 1967. It’s been a pedestrian bridge since and rehabilitation and repairs have kept the bridge beautiful and safe.

To cross the bridge, you’ll need to hike back out of the steep ravine - the bridge can be accessed on foot via Rice Avenue.

The views from the bridge are spectacular – it offers a nice view of Lake Superior and it’s a much easier stroll than the rugged ravine below.

The Old Iron Bridge Trail is not long, but it’s a somewhat challenging hike in Wisconsin and the path’s steps and rocks can become a little slippery – use caution and wear good footwear.
