While Hawaii certainly does not have a shortage of pristine, white sand beaches or man-made, oceanfront pools for us to choose from, occasionally we crave something a little more adventurous — like swimming holes, waterfalls, and tide pools. Enter this wild and beautiful swimming hole nestled off the beaten path along Maui’s famous Hana Highway. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s have an adventure at Waioka Pond in Hawaii:
Named Venus Pool in an old guidebook for no documented reason, Waioka Pond is an idyllic swimming hole that might just be one of the most gorgeous, underrated natural wonders in the entire Aloha State.

Situated along Maui’s lava rock coastline off the notorious Hana Highway near mile marker 48 south of Hana, the swimming hole’s distance from the island’s main tourist centers keeps the crowds down, though you will likely find quite a few people swimming here at any given time.

Nestled where a seasonal stream meets the ocean, Waioka Pond features striking blue waters and is surrounded by rugged boulders and stones. Waves lap at the far end of the pool, giving the cove a natural infinity pool appearance and keeping the water circulating.

The trail to reach this gem is found on property owned by the Hana Ranch, though legal access is ambiguous and it can be hard to spot. There are only a few parking spots along the east side of the road and no amenities of any type at the pools. This is truly as rugged as it gets.

Featuring a variety of rugged rock ledges, this local hangout is a popular cliff jumping spot. The tallest ledges rise 45 feet above the pool, though we don’t recommend jumping yourself for safety reasons.

This spectacular natural oasis is not recommended for those unused to climbing, scrambling, and off-trail hiking, but if you’re an experienced hiker with intimate knowledge of Hawaii’s streams and the Pacific Ocean, Waioka is an absolute paradise.

Unfortunately, like all Hawaii streams, this area is prone to flash flooding and flow heavy enough to make entering the pond unsafe for most. Just check out the difference between this image and the others featured.
