Washington has around 300 cities and small towns. So when we say there’s something for everyone, we’re not kidding. Still, there’s no denying that the small town charm is especially strong here, even for those who prefer city living. While all of Washington’s small towns have something appealing about them (yes, even that one), they don’t all have postcard-perfect downtown areas. Today, we’re highlighting a few that do. Just try not to fall in love with the best downtowns in Washington state.
- Walla Walla
Visit Walla Walla / Facebook Walla Walla is now an internationally known destination, and it has won awards for being the best wine city in America more than once. That being said, underneath the vino-induced fame, this is still a small town with a lot of old-fashioned charm. And although the area has expanded in recent years, it has never lost that vibe. Walla Walla, WA 99362, USA
- Port Townsend
PTMurphus / Flickr There’s no denying that Washington’s Victorian seaport village has a lot of charm. Whether you enjoy shopping, fishing, camping, ghost hunting, writing, or fine dining, you’ll find it in Port Townsend. Port Townsend, WA 98368, USA
- Langley
I LOVE LANGLEY / Facebook Every town on Whidbey Island has the ability to make you question your life choices and consider giving it all up for a simpler, small town island life. That being said, there really is something special about Langley. From art galleries and wine tasting to ice cream shops and incredible fine dining, it’s a captivating place at any age. Langley, WA 98260, USA
- Ellensburg
Jimmy Emerson, DVM / Flickr Ellensburg sits right in the middle of our beautiful state. Nearly every Washingtonian has passed through, but fewer have stayed to explore it. But did you know that this little city could have become our state capital if a fire hadn’t ripped through it on July 4, 1889? Stick around and check out the historic downtown area. There’s a lot to learn here. Ellensburg, WA, USA
- Winthrop
Jasperdo / Flickr Washington truly does have it all, and that includes a good old-fashioned Western town. It’s impossible to be in a bad mood after you’ve spent a day in downtown Winthrop. Winthrop, WA 98862, USA
- Snohomish
Jasperdo / Flickr Known for its abundance of antique shops and historic downtown area, Snohomish has been named one of the Top 10 Coolest Small Towns in America more than once. They even have a haunted saloon, The Oxford Saloon, which is full of spooky ghost stories (and great food). Snohomish, WA, USA
- Leavenworth
Visit Leavenworth WA / Facebook Whether you love or hate Leavenworth, you have to admit the downtown area is absolutely delightful. This is especially true in the winter when they turn on the Christmas charm and leave the dazzling lights on until mid-February. Leavenworth, WA 98826, USA
Do you agree that these are the best downtowns in Washington State, or does this list barely scratches the surface? Which ones do you think we need to talk about next time? If you want to explore more small towns, check out our list of the best small towns in Washington state.

Small Towns in Washington State September 15, 2022 Sara Dager Are there any haunted places to visit in Washington State? Washington State is chock full of ghost towns, so you best believe we have a lot of small town hauntings that are super scary! Of the haunted places in Washington state to visit, we think one of the creepiest is Kells Irish Pub and Restaurant. This space used to be known as the Butterworth building and was previously a morgue! While you enjoy tasty food and drinks to some live Irish music, keep an eye out for terrifying paranormal activity like mirrors breaking, lights flickering, and visible spirits. People have reported seeing a man inside the Guinness mirror as well as a young red-headed girl walking around the bar. And if that’s not scary enough for you, we have also put together a ghost town road trip through some of Washington’s most frightening abandoned areas. What are the most peaceful small towns in Washington State? There can be a bit of hustle and bustle in the bigger cities and towns in the Evergreen state, but if you are looking for peace and quiet, you can easily find it in the small towns in Washington. We are big fans of Kettle Falls and their welcome sign that reads “Home to 1640 people and one grouch.” It’s the perfect little spot to get away from it all and still take in all the natural beauty of Washington State. Another great choice is the town of Soap Lake. Named after the bizarre body of water that is said to contain skin-smoothing ingredients and even have healing powers, you may catch a tourist coming through Soap Lake, but in general, it is quite remote and the perfect spot to escape from humanity and take a soothing dip. Which small towns in Washington are best for a getaway? If you want to take a weekend getaway in Washington State, there are some awesome spots that provide lots to do but are small enough that you can experience most of what they have to offer in just a few days. We think you’ll particularly love spending a few days in the impressive Port Angeles. This area is packed with opportunities for outdoor adventures like hiking, biking, and fishing. Here, you can also see both the highest peaks and most stunning water views in Washington. There are over 45 parks and killer dining and shopping here as well. You can even take a tour of underground Port Angeles and discover how the city was raised up over 14 feet to avoid flooding many years ago!
