In the 1930s, the Garden Club, helmed by Mrs. Jessie DuPont and newspaper reporter, Pat Moran, chose to preserve the tree. Moran is credited with naming it Treaty Oak, after writing a fictional piece about how settlers and indigenous people met under the tree to sign peace treaties.
