There’s no better afternoon spent than one in the heart of Tennessee’s natural beauty, and though hiking along Trillium Gap is a popular pastime most folks don’t know to keep their eyes peeled for a magical, watery little grotto. If you’re looking for a weekend where both hiking boots and a camera is required, then you just might want to make your way to Grotto Falls. Beautifully lush and thick with the sound of gurgling, rushing water, this hike is popular amongst hiking enthusiasts for good reason.
Josh Barnosky - AllTrails The best way to hike to Grotto Falls is along the Trillium Gap Trail, a hiking trail that stretches just a handful of miles near Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The out-and-back trail is fairly challenging, but the 544-foot elevation gain isn’t too difficult for most hikers. It should take just over an hour to complete if you choose to hike the Great Smoky Mountain trail out and back with purpose.
Katie Flick - AllTrails The route is rocky and can be closed seasonally, so make sure you check local news or government websites for any changes. We recommend hiking during the warmer seasons to avoid any icy issues or slippery slopes due to wet conditions.
Tim Nash - AllTrails You will wander through an old-growth hemlock forest before you reach Grotto Falls. The 25-foot waterfall is beautiful, and salamanders abound in the wet, cool area. If it’s hot outside, you can even dip your toes in the water for a little relief. However, make sure you don’t climb on the rocks around the falls, as hikers have been severely injured.
Hannah Grimes - AllTrails The entire area is full of stunning natural sounds, from the gush of water to the chirps of birds and the rustle of small animals. Make sure you take a moment to enjoy the quiet beauty, the clean air, the moment you had the chance to steal away from the world. The view is magical, and the falls add an element of wild whimsy.
Rachel Sexton - AllTrails What a magical scene!
