During the warm weather months, tourists from around the country and the world flock to the Black Hills to check out our world-class landmarks, and who can blame them? While Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse are great to visit in the summer, you may want to avoid the crowds and see something new, which is why we highly recommend visiting the often overlooked Vermillion, South Dakota:
Located in the far southeast corner of South Dakota, Vermillion is a town of nearly 12,000 residents best known for housing South Dakota State University.

Founded in 1859 and incorporated in 1873, Vermillion is one of the most historically significant areas in the state, thanks to SoDak’s original residents and for being a famous stop during Lewis and Clark’s groundbreaking journey.
Vermillion Area Chamber & Development Company Facebook Lewis and Clark camped out in and explored the area for several weeks.
If you find the Lewis and Clark expedition fascinating (or if you just love history), you will find plenty to see and do around Vermillion, like following in the footsteps of the explorers at Spirit Mount (pictured) or looking through artifacts at the W.H. Over Museum.

When the weather is nice, you want to be outside, which is where Vermillion’s many parks and pools, festivals and events, and beautiful trails come in!
