Tucked in the southwestern, mountainous part of Virginia near the Tennessee border is the historic town of Abingdon. This town of 8,000 people punches above its weight with a historic town center, acclaimed food scene and cultural amenities, and opportunities to explore the outdoors. In short, it’s the perfect weekend getaway. Here are some ideas for a perfect itinerary in Abingdon.
First, let’s talk accommodations. There are several places to stay in town, but none loom as large as the Martha Washington Inn & Spa. You could spend the whole weekend here if you wanted to with its heated saltwater pool, tennis and pickleball courts, and 18-hole miniature golf.

Bring your bike or rent one for the Virginia Creeper Trail. This 34-mile rails-to-trails path is a popular way to enjoy the area’s rolling farmland and forests. The easiest, most popular way to do it is to start in the town of Damascus, ride 17 miles downhill, and take a shuttle service back.

Of course, you don’t have to have a bike to enjoy the trail. You can hike it, or even ride a horse (horses not included).

After that bike ride, maybe it’s time to head back to The Martha, guest or not, to unwind with one of their spa services. Or if you’re a guest, head back to that heated saltwater pool!

While you’re in town, make sure to see a show at the Barter Theatre, the state theatre of Virginia and the longest-running professional theatre in the country. They produce a wide variety of performances including musicals, children’s shows, and dramas.

Let’s not forget about food. For three years in a row, Abingdon has won the USA Today Reader’s Choice for best small town food scene. With over 30 independently-owned restaurants, it’s not hard to find some good grub! Try The Tavern, in a 1779 inn.
