When summer heat blankets the state, and it’s hot and humid and the sun unrelenting, there’s a place that’s as magical as it is cool and refreshing. Amnicon Falls is located in far northern Wisconsin, a lush oasis that’s beautiful to see and wonderful to experience; as a waterfall swimming hole, it’s one of Wisconsin’s more unforgettable swimming spots. The falls is located in Amnicon Falls State Park, an 825-acre state park in South Range. It’s located just south of the City of Superior.

The park actually has a series of four waterfalls - the Upper and Lower Amnicon Falls, Snake Pit Falls, and the Now and Then Falls (named after the seasonal nature of the falls – not the coming-of-age film from the ’90s).

Water in the Upper Falls cascades about 15 feet into a cool and refreshing plunge pool – this is one of the main spots that draws swimmers.

You can also swim at Lower Falls – they are both refreshing places to splash and play.

If you would rather stay dry, or if it’s not the season for swimming, there’s still a lot to experience at the park. Two miles of trails trace the route of the waterfalls.

There’s also a scenic covered bridge that spans Lower Falls – the 55-foot bridge was once a highway bridge. It was moved here in the 1930s and the Brule Civilian Conservation Corps added the roof. If you’re on the fence about swimming, the view of the refreshing waters from this bridge may make you change your mind!

The park is open year round from 6 a.m. – 11 p.m. Camping is permitted and the park has signage about Douglas Fault, the geological formation that created these amazing falls.
