Minnesota’s most popular waterfalls get a lot of attention. From Gooseberry Falls to Minneopa, Minnehaha, and beyond, these landmarks draw countless visitors throughout the year. But our state is also home to other, more secret waterfalls. Hidden from sight and known only to those who have bothered to search, they’re hidden gems that deserve to be explored more.
Today, we want to introduce a little-known waterfall in St. Paul, Minnesota. Shadow Falls is not the state’s biggest or tallest waterfall, but its tucked-away surroundings make it one of the most memorable. You can follow a 1-mile path along the Mississippi River to see it for yourself. Check it out:

When you arrive, you’ll find a quiet park anchored by a 36-foot-tall memorial to World War I soldiers. There is a grassy area popular with picnickers, and a few benches scattered about.

Not far from the viewing platform, there’s a path. Unmarked and unpaved, it is easy to miss. Head down it, and you’ll soon find yourself surrounded by forest on every side.

The path winds around a deep gorge. Follow it, and you’ll soon hear - and then see - one of Minnesota’s most hidden waterfalls.

Shadow Falls flows over a tall limestone cliff, creating a spectacular view. Spring and fall are the best times to visit when the water volume is higher, creating a steady cascade over the cliff.

The path continues over the waterfall, which should be easy to step over. Step carefully down, avoiding mud and rocks, and you can even go behind the waterfall!
