It can be easy to forget just how many beautiful parks and state forests we have in Connecticut, especially if you live in one of our more populated cities. But we have an incredible 139 state parks and forests in the Nutmeg State – this is even more impressive when you consider our relatively small size! One of our favorite state forests in Connecticut is also one of our largest. Cockaponset State Forest spans an impressive 17,000 acres of protected land, and it’s unbelievably gorgeous.
The forest is a bit disjointed and made up of different parcels of land, spread out primarily in Middlesex and New Haven Counties.

The beautiful forest offers more than 100 miles of hiking trails. Some are also open to horse or mountain bike access.
John Roy/Alltrails You’ll find plenty of overlooks, streams, trees, and more throughout the woods.
With so much land to explore, there’s a great variety of trails for all types of hikers here.
Jason Bristol/Google Maps There are longer, more difficult treks, in addition to easy, kid-friendly options. Of course, the longer trails don’t have to be taken in their entirety, so don’t be intimidated if you see signs with long distances on them!
Pattaconk Lake is the peaceful blue jewel of the forest. This magnificent lake has a gorgeous sandy beach that’s great for a little fun in the sun.

Of course, the lake itself offers great recreational opportunities as well! Kayaking, swimming, and fishing are all popular activities here.
