Tucked deep in the mountains of southwest Oklahoma is a stunning waterfall that is rarely seen in person because you have to hike to get to it. The Forty-Foot Hole is only accessible by a rugged trail in the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge and it’s so worth the trek to see in person. If you’re interested in lacing up those hiking boots and exploring deep canyon walls, breathtaking waterfalls, and beautiful wildlife, let’s hit the trail on this Oklahoma waterfall hike.
The Forty Foot Hole in the Wichita Mountain Wildlife is a hidden gem that rarely gets seen in person because it’s only accessible by hiking to it. The waterfall is inside the canyon walls and was carved by Cache Creek running through it.

The fastest route to the waterfall is by taking Kite Tail, part of the Dog Run Hollow trail system. The easiest way to find the trailhead is to stop at the Visitor Center and get a map and they’ll show you the best route.

The trail is only 2.4-miles roundtrip and is rated as easy but there are cliffs and rocky terrain so please note that it is not all flat.

Be sure and carry the trail map with you as there are many little side trails that can get you closer to the waterfall than others.

The hike will take you about 2 hours but allow some extra time to enjoy the scenery and waterfall. If you are taking dogs or children please be aware that there are many cliff edges that are not guarded.

Curious where the name comes from? Some of the areas below the waterfall in the creek reach depths of 40 feet, hence the name for the waterfall.
