There’s something meditative about wandering through lush, tree-filled forests. Naturalists and artists have long known this; John Muir, the Father of National Parks, regularly sought umbrage in the woods and wilderness. If you don’t have a day to devote to nature, or are looking for a more accessible forest bathing experience, there’s a little-known tunnel of trees in Akron, Ohio, that’s sure to capture your heart and lift your spirits!

Known as the “Rubber Capital of the World,” Akron is an Ohio city that’s often dismissed as industrial and decidedly urban. But there’s so much more to this Northeast Ohio town, especially in terms of natural beauty.

For instance, Akron is home to the Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens. Not only is its stately 65-room Tudor Revival Manor House a National Historic Landmark, but this Akron destination contains 70 acres of beautiful, landscaped grounds and footpaths.

This Ohio oasis is a 550-foot long tunnel (or alley) of trees consisting of more than 100 gray birches growing from the original root stock. The effect is nothing short of magical.

Over time, the birch trees have formed a natural corridor in which a contrast between sunlight and shadows dapples in the overhead canopy of leaves. This casts a dreamy glow to the tree tunnel that’s truly better than any Instagram filter.
