July 20, 2022 Chris Dodge While I stay at the Dancing Bear Lodge what are some great things to do in town? Townsend is known as the quiet side of the Smokies. Whereas Gatlingburg is more filled with attractions Townsend is where you can go to slow down and really take in all the natural beauty this side of the Great Smokey Mountains. Quiet does not mean boring, there is still a smorgasbord of activities to do in this peacefully little town. With the Smokey Mountains being only 10 minutes away it’s easy to see why you would want to drive over to be a part of this amazing national park. Cades Cove is the biggest draw for people. Traveling along a one-lane road filled with historic buildings and views that are hard to turn away from. We recommend you know ahead of time that this can be very busy and may take quite a bit of time to drive through because when wildlife comes out to visit all cars will stop. So be patient, take it slow, and really take in all the beauty Cades Cove has to offer. Not far from Cades Cove is a nice waterfall right off of the road called The Sinks. Townsend is a wonderful little town and was also rated as one of the best small town vacation spots in the whole united states. Take a trip further into The Great Smokey Mountains and you can visit Clingmans Dome. This is a great spot to watch the sunset. Also, check out the Elkmont ghost town. Or hike the every popular Alum Cave trail. If you want to go deep into a real cavern though we recommend The Tuckaleechee Caverns. This interesting cave has many great rock formations and even a huge room almost big enough to fit a football stadium inside! Plus you can see a 210-foot waterfall underground for something truly unique.
