Florida is one of those fascinating states that offers a unique glimpse into history that other states don’t get to experience. This is especially true when it comes to shipwrecks. We’ve discussed before the off-shore shipwreck in Sebastian Inlet State Park that is from a 1715 Spanish Fleet. While that shipwreck is more well-known, we have another that remains far off the coast and quite hidden. The Mandalay Wreck in Florida is so hidden that very few have seen it in person. But it still remains a fascinating part of Florida’s history.

Back in 1966 on New Year’s Day, the schooner known as the Mandalay ran aground on Long Reef off the coast of Florida.

The schooner, built in 1928, is spread out underneath the crystal clear water and is home to many different schools of colorful fish, as well as reef flora and fauna.

Today, located on the eastern part of Biscayne National Park, anyone with access and snorkeling gear can dive and see the wreck up close.

Visitors who don’t have their own means of transportation can sign up with a local tour company to snorkel in Biscayne National Park.

The wreck is located about an hour off the coast by boat, so buckle up for a long ride.

The reason why most people haven’t seen this wreck in person is that if the weather and sea conditions are off, nobody will be able to access it.

But, as long as the conditions are right, this is one of the easier dives out of the 44 identified wrecks in Biscayne National Park. It also is one of six wrecks that will be designated as part of the Maritime Heritage Trail.

Luckily of the 23 vacationers on the Mandalay back in 1965, only one injury was sustained and it was not life-threatening. Today, guests can enjoy a shallow snorkel site with an interesting history.
