Cemeteries in Connecticut can be spooky places – after all, they are home to hundreds of dead people. It’s no surprise that rumors of ghosts and spirits often surround cemeteries, and it’s not uncommon for there to be stories about unexplained phenomena like floating orbs or strange sounds coming from cemeteries. One beautiful and historic cemetery that has some urban legends surrounding it is Great Hill Cemetery in Seymour. The 18th-century burial ground is tucked away in the woods and is still in use today.

We think it’s a shame that this cemetery is best-known for the spooky legends surrounding it, because it really is a lovely and historic place.

You may have also heard this referred to as Hookman’s Cemetery, a name which is a reference to the most famous ghost story about this place.

If you believe the stories, Great Hill Cemetery once had a caretaker with a missing hand that had been replaced by a hook. While that image may bring to mind Captain Hook of “Peter Pan” fame, this story is definitely not for children or Disney movies.

According to legend, many years ago, the caretaker committed suicide by hanging himself from one of the many trees in the cemetery.

Supposedly, unlucky visitors who park underneath a tree in the cemetery will sometimes hear a faint tapping on the roof that is thought to be the caretaker’s hook hand.

The incident seems to happen much more commonly at nighttime, when the ghosts and spirits are more likely to be out and about, but it’s worth noting that the cemetery closes at sunset and entering at night is considered trespassing.
