It’s no secret that we’re big on desserts in Texas. However, we usually play it safe with our southern classics like pecan pie, peach cobbler, etc. And there’s nothing wrong with that – those desserts are delicious, after all. But sometimes it’s nice to step outside the box and experience the many interesting culinary creations that exist in the world (or in Texas, for our purposes). These seven unique desserts in Texas will delight ALL of your senses (especially taste):

  1. The Volcano at Rainforest Cafe (Galveston)

Yelp/Robert C. This dessert is basically a huge molten lava cake in the shape of a volcano with more chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream on top. The coolest part, though, is how it’s presented. Whenever someone orders one, the servers stick sparklers in it and bring it to the table yelling “VOLCANOOOO!” The entire restaurant might stare at you, but the deliciousness makes it totally worth it. Mmmmmm, awkward attention.

  1. Meringue pie at Koffee Kup Restaurant (Hico)

Yelp/Nicole M. If you ever want a pie that’s more meringue than filling, Koffee Kup is your place. In fact, Koffee Kup is your place for ALL the best pie in Texas. Most of the time, the meringue is the “topping,” so to speak, not the main part of the pie. That isn’t the case here - but that doesn’t mean the taste is compromised at all. Yelp/Bananarchy Who knew how versatile bananas could be? That’s all this place serves - hence the name. You can get yours dipped in chocolate, vegan chocolate, vanilla, or peanut butter and then rolled in your choice of topping (Oreos, graham crackers, candy, crushed nuts, etc.). It may be a nutty idea, but it’s sure to satisfy your inner primate. Yep, you can even eat the bag - but you may not want to after you’ve stuffed your mouth with the delicious chocolate cake, fruit, whipped cream, and decadent sauce that it’s filled with. Don’t think just chocolate-covered strawberries and truffles; this sweet shop goes above and beyond the average chocolatier. Everything from chocolate-covered moon pies to Twinkies, fudgy potato chips to peanut butter cups as big as your head, fully constructed s’mores dipped in rich chocolate… we think it’s safe to say this place is every little kid’s dream. This adorable little pie shop in Dallas has somehow figured out how to transform one of America’s all-time favorite cakes into a rich, delicious pie. Well, friends, usually you come across boring classic combos like chocolate chip cookies and vanilla ice cream or sugar cookies with strawberry ice cream, etc. At Sweet Sammies, they serve up delicious, complex flavor mixtures that will send your taste buds straight to heaven. This one is a peanut butter chocolate chip cookie, an oatmeal toffee cookie (yes - you can get two different cookies!) with bunny tracks ice cream in between (that’s vanilla ice cream with fudge swirls and peanut butter cups, by the way). Naturally, there are some traditional Texas desserts that are close to the top of the comfort food chain, thanks to being outrageously delicious (and oh-so-comforting). Some excellent examples include cowboy cookies, which are basically giant oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, Texas pecan pie (there are too many places that lay claim to having the best pecan pie in Texas, but we’re not complaining), and, of course, Texas-style chocolate sheet cake.   Where can I find the best Texas desserts?  You’ll find amazing Texas desserts at just about any local watering hole or grille you can find. No matter what, you’re sure to find dessert menus at those mom-and-pop restaurants in Texas that are definitely worth writing home about. Some of our favorite places for finding dessert in Texas include smaller towns like Carrollton and bigger cities like Austin.
