Something wicked this way comes. And it’s not just in the form of a classic dark fantasy novel by Ray Bradbury. Oh, no. It’s actually very real, and it’s coming right here to our very own slice of paradise in West Virginia.

Yes, we’ll say it again: something wicked this way comes. By “this way,” we mean to the little West Virginia mountain town of Fayetteville. And by “wicked,” we don’t mean winter, although that is coming, too.

We mean witches! Witches and warlocks, that is, and on stand up paddleboards to boot.

What? Yes, you read that right. Welcome to Fayetteville, West Virginia’s annual Halloween Witches and Warlocks Paddle.

Now that is definitely something you don’t see floating down the New River every day!

Once a year, this group of Fayetteville area witches and warlocks gathers to float their way down through the New River Gorge. And this year, you can join them … maybe.

Here’s the catch: registration is required, and space is very, very limited. Here’s another catch: to participate, you must be an experienced SUP paddler. This is a fun stretch of water, but not always an easy one!

Here’s what there is plenty of room for, though, and it doesn’t require any experience: spectating! So even if you can’t BYOSUP (Bring Your Own Stand Up Paddleboard), come anyway to this delightfully quirky mountain town to watch these witches and warlocks take to the water for a paddle on October 30th, 2022. Or if you want to participate a little more actively in a wizardly event, come later in the year, in January, for Fayetteville’s Harry Potter weekend. Either way, it’ll be a purely magical experience you won’t soon forget.
