Harry Potter has captured the imagination of readers worldwide, taking us into a world of witchcraft and wizardry. We’ve all probably imagined ourselves studying at Hogwarts and drinking butterbeer – at least once or twice. Next time you’re driving through the darling town of Barrington, keep an eye out for perhaps the most beautiful building in town. Some may even say it’s much like our own Hogwarts in Rhode Island.

Nestled along the Rhode Island coast, the enchanting town of Barrington is home to more than 16,000 residents. It’s a popular destination for nature lovers, treasure hunters, and foodies.

While you’re in town, you’ll likely pass Barrington Town Hall, a majestic building that’s been the town’s centerpiece since 1888.

Today, it houses the town hall, but during its early days, it served a variety of purposes. The town clerk, treasurer, police department, and even a jail cell comprised the residents of the building.

For a time, the building was also home to the local school. The signs still remain, paying homage to the town hall’s rich and storied past.

Often described as “medieval,” the historic town hall cost just $15,000 to build. Both the design and construction credit goes to Stone, Carpenter & Willson from nearby Providence.
