We love our small towns here in Utah. They are scattered all over the state and are often where we find some of the best shops, restaurants, and accommodations. But, there is one small town in northern Utah that is often overlooked and is secretly one of the best places in Utah — the town of Wellsville.

Wellsville is a small town located in Cache Valley, south of Logan and just outside of Sardine Canyon. Fewer than 4,000 people live in this darling area.

Wellsville is often overlooked by Logan and many other Cache Valley cities, but Wellsville is one destination that certainly deserves some attention.

This small town was first established in September 1856 and was the first permanent settlement in Cache Valley. Twenty-five individuals came into the valley and set up a base camp near a small spring, which they called Maughan’s Fort. In just a short amount of time, the settlement flourished.

Today, when you visit this small town, you’ll notice evidence of its pioneer history. There are still many historic buildings all throughout the area, which can give you a glimpse into the past.

This small town is nestled at the base of the Wellsville Mountains. These mountains are only 14 miles long and five miles wide but they are steep. In fact, the Wellsville Mountains are considered some of the steepest in all of the Rocky Mountains.

However, if you aren’t up for a hike, just sit back and admire these mountains from afar — they really are incredible.

Of course, one of the must-visit attractions in Wellsville is the American West Heritage Center.

Every fall, visitors from all over Cache Valley and northern Utah come to visit the Little Bear Bottoms Corn Maze, the Haunted River Trail, and the Spooky Barn Ride.
