The Pearl River is among the most well-known rivers in Mississippi. And while many are aware of the river’s existence, most are completely oblivious to the dangers that lurk just beneath the water’s surface.

Beginning in Neshoba County, the Pearl River meanders over 400 miles through Mississippi and Louisiana before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico.

These days, you won’t find any floating saloons on the Pearl River. You’ll likely see kayaks and canoes, though, since it’s now a popular paddling spot.

And with plenty of sandbars, the river is popular among swimmers and campers, too.

However, those seeking out the Pearl River for recreation should use extreme caution because there’s one stretch of the river that’s notoriously dangerous.

The stretch of river in question can be found just off Highway 35 by the Pearl River bridge near Carthage. The area is a very popular swimming spot, but it’s actually extremely unsafe.

What makes this particular portion of the river so dangerous? Well, there’s a very steep drop-off, making the area prone to an undercurrent.

Over the years, numerous people have been swept under the powerful current. Some have survived, while several have perished.
