Indiana is low-key one of the best states for hiking, despite the fact that it doesn’t get nearly enough love on a regular basis. While hikers often prefer states with more mountainous terrain, they tend to neglect beautiful places like the Midwest, where a stroll outside on an autumn day (or any day, really) can be one of the most relaxing experiences in the world. When it comes to our favorite hiking trails in Indiana, just about any of them are perfect for when the leaves change, but there’s one trail in particular that we’d like to admire right now: head out to Potato Creek State Park and check out what we can only describe as the perfect fall color hike in Indiana.
With as much lush greenery as there is all packed into Potato Creek State Park, it’s no surprise that it ends up becoming a brilliant tour de force of color in autumn.
Michael Jones/AllTrails Do keep in mind that there is an entry fee for the park, but it’s per vehicle (so pack all your friends into one van) and quite reasonable.
Let’s check out an easy, simple trail that’s open to both hikers/walkers and bicyclists: the Potato Creek Bike Trail.
Emily Miller/AllTrails It’s surrounded by large, mature trees that cannot be missed when the leaves are in mid-shift. It’s very easy and accessible by just about everyone, making it the perfect way to spend an autumn afternoon with the whole family (and all those friends you crammed into the van).
The whole trail is 6.7 miles long and takes about two hours to finish - though, of course, you can decide whether to do it in segments or conquer the whole thing all at once.
Emily Miller/AllTrails It might take longer than two hours because you’ll probably want to stop and admire the foliage about a million times along the way. No worries; we won’t judge. We’re totally going to do the same thing.
The trail leads to some truly astounding views of the lake, and in the fall, the lake is always surrounded by brilliant colors.
todd emerick/AllTrails This trail is definitely excellent for anyone looking for a nice, easy stroll through a seasonal wonderland - it’s paved the entire way through, ensuring that you’ll barely break a sweat.
The beauty of the trail includes more than just woods, too - there are also some gorgeous prairies, hills, and other side-quests to embark upon along the way.
Natasha Martinez/AllTrails We’re pretty sure you’re going to want to re-experience this trail at least three more times: one for each season. Indiana is one of those states that experiences all four, and each one brings with it a sense of charm and delight you won’t soon find elsewhere.
So come out to one of the most beautiful and underrated state parks in Indiana to explore an autumn wonderland.
Emily Miller/AllTrails Soon enough, the chill of winter will arrive - what better time to get outdoors than right now?
