Did you know there are haunted locations all over Michigan? Though Mackinac Island is Michigan’s most haunted area, the creepiest haunted spot on the island is Fort Mackinac. If you aren’t scared of ghosts or just want to get a chill up your spine on your travels, then consider visiting Fort Mackinac for more than just a history lesson.

Fort Mackinac is a former military outpost built to control the straits. Situated on Mackinac Island, it made good use of the location until it closed in 1895. Today, it operates as a museum as part of the state park.

However, Mackinac Island, and consequently the fort, is somewhat well known for being haunted.

According to witness accounts, the children of a past commander haunt the officer’s hill quarters. Seeing a kid’s ghostly form or strange object movement is the first way to get spooked in a museum like this.

In addition to stories of ghost children and a feeling of death, a phantom piper is said to walk the stonework above the north port. On misty mornings, it’s said you can faintly hear his music and see him ever so slightly in the fog.

Walking by an area called the “black hole,” you may feel a chill creep up your neck. Surprisingly, other than hearing things and feeling like death due to a skeleton found inside years ago, this is the least concerning area.

Whether you’re more scared of a hole people probably died in or ghost children, Fort Mackinac is a serious place for paranormal activity. Will you be able to handle it?

Though not everyone believes in ghosts or the paranormal, there’s no doubt that a fort with military use featured a lot of death during its history. Even if you don’t see any ghosts, the museum is a great place for visitors of all ages. You can learn more on the fort’s official website.
