Fall drives are nice and hikes are lovely but perhaps the most beautiful fall trip to take this season is along the Buffalo National River. Starting from Tyler Bend, this two-day getaway is simply gorgeous. There’s no doubt that the Buffalo River float will be your favorite fall trip you take this year in Arkansas!
In September when the first nuances of fall begin to pop up along the Buffalo National River, outdoor enthusiasts get ready to hit the trails… and the rivers!
Facebook/Buffalo Outdoor Center It’s during this time when the trees begin changing, which means soon the lush landscape of the Natural State will look like a colorful work of art!
A fall float trip along the Buffalo National River is a fantastic way to enjoy Arkansas’ beauty.

The Buffalo River has dozens of float trips but one, in particular, is perfect in fall.
Facebook/Buffalo Outdoor Center The 17.5-mile float from Tyler Bend to South Maumee has some of the best foliage along the river. The Tyler Bend Visitor Center is located at 170 Ranger Rd., St. Joe, AR, 72675.
Besides being gorgeous, this float is one of the more secluded trips to take, especially around October.
Facebook/Buffalo Outdoor Center Tyler Bend may be a popular area but once you’re floating you’ll just have the sounds of the surrounding nature. Most folks think of the Buffalo being a summer destination, but a trip later in the year certainly has its perks.
For one, camping under the stars of the Natural State is unforgettable.
Facebook/Buffalo Outdoor Center Roasted marshmallows, fireside snuggles, and spectacular stargazing will make this trip memorable. Primitive camping is permitted anyway along the Buffalo as long as its 1/2-mile from any park maintained areas. A good spot halfway between today’s two points would be near the Red Bluff. Use this map to plot your trip.
Tyler Bend to South Maumee is filled with picture-perfect scenery.
Google/Scott Grenerth It’s easy to extend the trip as well. Add it on to floats westward of Tyler Bend or have another camp out at Maumee.
There really isn’t anywhere more beautiful than along the Buffalo.

A great resource to use for any Buffalo float is the Buffalo Outdoor Center. They offer shuttles, cabins, as well as plotted out float trips for a perfect Buffalo getaway.

Buffalo River Float August 16, 2022 Sarah M. What are some other fall adventures to have along the Buffalo River? In addition to the above autumnal Buffalo River float, you’ll discover some downright lovely hikes in this region of the Natural State – especially in the height of fall foliage. For instance, the Indian Rock House Trail features countless creeks, a historic mine, an impressive rock shelter, and stunningly gorgeous fall foliage. The 2.8-mile loop is mildly strenuous, but the cool weather will keep you from breaking a sweat on this fall trek in Arkansas. Buffalo Point Trail, the Goat Trail, and Hemmed-in Hollow all offer jaw-dropping views for hikers. Pick a path that best fits your skill level and prepare to be floored by the foliage – there really is no place in Arkansas more beautiful in the fall than the Buffalo National River! What’s fall like in Arkansas? With temperatures starting to dip and blue skies and vibrant foliage for days, fall is always a beautiful time to enjoy an Arkansas forest or two. As with so many southern states, Arkansas experiences “peak fall colors” a bit later in the season, generally around the last week of October and in early November. What’s a fun fall getaway destination in Arkansas? The Natural State is home to unrivaled scenic beauty; in the autumn, the Ozarks are ablaze in a veritable kaleidoscope of color. Nestled in the Arkansas Ozarks, Eureka Springs is as pretty as a postcard in the fall, when the landscape shines in golds and oranges, which pop against the bold blue of the beautiful Buffalo National River. Perfect for a day trip or weekend getaway, Eureka Springs, Arkansas, definitely deserves a place on your fall foliage bucket list.
