We love a good hike through the woods or mountains as much as anyone, but there’s something special about a beach hike in Connecticut. Walking on a trail along the water is so peaceful, and there’s nothing like dipping your toes in to cool off. Silver Sands State Park is one of our favorite state parks in the Nutmeg State. This beautiful oasis has a great variety of landscape to keep you intrigued as you meander down the park’s trails. One of our favorites is the easy boardwalk trail right along the water. Check it out:

Silver Sands State Park spans nearly 300 acres and has a remarkable array of different landscapes. Beaches, dunes, marshes, and forest are all spread throughout the park.

This leisurely beach side stroll won’t wear you out much at all.

The two mile-trail features such breathtaking scenery that it wont’ even feel like exercise! This is one of our favorite kid-friendly hikes in Connecticut.

Since the trail is so close to the water and nearby Charles Island is a bird sanctuary, you’re likely to see a few feathered friends.

The boardwalk portion is perfect for jogging, but honestly we prefer to complete it at a stroll. After all, you definitely want to take time to enjoy the amazing landscape that surrounds you!

The park has a really interesting history. It was declared a state park after Hurricane Diane in 1955.

Michele O’Neill/Alltrails It’s had several uses through the years, including as a landfill, fertilizer factory, residential area, and even a Catholic retreat.

We know one thing: we’re thankful this gorgeous area has been preserved for public enjoyment!

Please note that dogs are prohibited in much of the park so as to not disturb the wildlife. This is one hike that Fido won’t be able to enjoy with you.
