Northern counties in Wisconsin are covered by vast forests, and when the air cools and the days grow short, this region explodes into brilliant shades of orange, red, and yellow. While Wisconsin has some scenic hiking trails that are short and sweet, this is not one of those trails. The North Country Trail travels nearly 5,000 miles, winding through a huge stretch of the northern United States.

The scenic trail crosses eight states and stretches all the way from Middlebury, in central Vermont, to Lake Sakakawea State Park, in central North Dakota.

A 220-mile stretch of the trail can be found in northern Wisconsin. It enters the state on the west from Minnesota and connects to Michigan via the State Highway 122 bridge.
