The Dunstanburgh Castle: Have you ever heard of it? While many may not recognize the name, you may recognize the image, as it is an abandoned and dilapidated castle in England that was built in 1313. Sadly, what remains of the intricate stone castle is not what it used to be, which is why it reminds us of this Colorado hike with castle ruins:

Welcome to the Mount Falcon Park and its can’t-miss Castle Trail Loop!

Located near Morrison, the Mount Falcon Castle Trail Loop is a butt-busting yet totally worth it 7-mile loop trail that winds through some of the area’s best landscapes before passing the ruins of John Brisben Walker’s castle.

Who is John Brisben Walker, and why did he try to build a castle in the middle of nowhere? The late Walker was an inventor who planned to build a summer home for then-President Woodrow Wilson.

Sadly, due to a lack of funds brought on by World War I, the home never came to fruition, leaving behind the stone remains that can still be visited today.

Can you see why we call it a miniature Dunstanburgh Castle (pictured)?

In addition to the castle ruins, hikers will also discover an old lookout tower complete with jaw-dropping views of the Denver skyline.
