The Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is easily one of the most enchanting areas in all of New Mexico. This 57,000-acre refuge is located south of Socorro and is where you can capture some of the most incredible images of birds, deer, and other wildlife. While there are a few ways to explore this area, one of our favorites is the Boardwalk Trail.
The Boardwalk Trail is a short and easy trail that takes you over wetland with open water and cattails. It is one beautiful way to get up close to the water and receive a new perspective of this incredible wildlife refuge.

You’ll find the trailhead and parking lot along the south loop of the refuge. Here, you will also find the start of the Marsh Overlook Trail and the Elmendorf Trail.

The out-and-back Boardwalk Trail is only 0.2 miles, making it short and sweet. The trail is flat and the wide boardwalk makes the path wheelchair and stroller friendly.

This is definitely not a trail that you will want to rush through. As you walk over the open water, you may see all types of birds like herons, blackbirds, swallows, and more. Keep your eyes open for other wildlife like muskrats and turtles as well.

If you want a hike that is a little longer, consider adding on the Marsh Overlook Trail, a 2.5-mile loop trail.
