There are a surprising number of wonderful trails in Kansas. Many of them span through our gorgeous Great Plains, with some meandering through the rolling beauty of the Loess Hills. One amazing terrain that is often underappreciated is the magnificent wetlands of Kansas. It doesn’t get much prettier than the Baker Wetlands, a 927-acre preserve that offers fantastic landscapes and an array of unique plant and animal life that you don’t see in much of the state. It also happens to be the home of a boardwalk trail that’s a true delight – it’s the perfect way to check out all the region’s beauty while getting a workout simultaneously!
There are several trails within the Baker Wetlands - we’ll concentrate today on the 1.7-mile Diagonal Trail. You can find the trailhead near the Baker Wetlands Discovery Center.
Joshua Clary/Alltrails If you’re looking for a quick walk, you can just stick to the boardwalk loop, but the trail does continue on through the wetlands.
There’s very little shade along the trail, so you won’t want to head out on a hot day.

This trail is a must for those who love wildlife spotting, especially bird watchers. The diversity of the species you’ll see is incredible.
