Maine’s scenic drives could keep us busy all year long. Some of the best scenic drives can be found in Maine, from wintry jaunts through the mountains to coastal cruises with the windows down and that summer breeze in our hair, there’s nothing better than a road trip through Vacationland. Unless, of course, you choose to take this eerie road located up north. Have you done it? Would you dare to do it?
There are a few roads in Maine that cause chills to run down the spine, but none quite like Route 182 in Hancock and Washington counties.

Also known as Black’s Woods Road, there’s rumor of an accident that took place here involving a young couple. The timing is debated. Some say it was in the 1970s and involved a post-prom drive. Others say it was in the 1800s and involved a toppled carriage. But most folks agree that a horrible accident took place and that the ripples are still felt.

This road is also prone to fog, making figures blur.

Drive near Fox Pond and you may see a woman. Most refer to her as “Catherine” and she appears to be without a head.

As the story goes, she was with a man when their car (or carriage) was involved in an accident. She lost her head and her companion’s body was never found. She’s now relegated to an (after) life of roaming Route 182 for help while she searches for her beau’s body.

And while many ghost stories don’t include much interference from the apparitions themselves, this one is different.

Catherine needs help and if you don’t provide it, she won’t be happy.

If you don’t offer to assist Catherine, you might face your own deadly accident. Or, you might be plagued with bad luck for years.

Cherryfield may seem like a perfectly cheery place for such a grim tale but, there have been other accidents here. Some say these are folks who ran into Catherine on the same road.
