San Juan Island, nestled away in the northwestern portion of Washington State, has a number of stunning attributes, from the undeniably breathtaking landscape to the unique species that call the area home. The small seaside enclave, which includes the town of Friday Harbor, has been noted for its rural characteristics.

Over the years, San Juan Island has made a name for itself because of such attractions as Lime Kiln Point State Park and the multiple lookout areas that make Orca whale watching possible. The community is also home to a trolley service that offers quick-hit, breezy views of the island’s various attractions.

The Friday Harbor Jolly Trolley is the only remaining open-air trolley tour company in Washington State. Trolley tour guides share their wisdom of San Juan Island in a way that is fun-filled and nostalgic.

There also are opportunities to witness some of the nearby mountain views. Glimpses of two mountain ranges — Cascade and Olympic — are possible from San Juan Island.

Riders on the Friday Harbor Jolly Trolley also will have an opportunity to see the various harbors on the island and several beautiful resorts. The tour itinerary also includes glimpses of such attractions as the San Juan Vineyards, Sculpture Park, and an alpaca farm.

One of the most popular spots on San Juan Island, however, is the Cattle Point Lighthouse. The historic venue, which was declared a national monument in 2013, is adjacent to the Washington State Cattle Point Natural Resources Conservation Area. San Juan Island visitors frequently make special stops to tour the lighthouse.

The Cattle Point Lighthouse is situated along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, a body of water that is a total of 96 miles in length. The strait serves as the Salish Sea’s outlet into the Pacific Ocean.
