If you live in New Jersey, you know that the hyped-up reputation of industrial plants and crowded highways isn’t the most accurate stereotype. One of the most scenic drives in the Northeast is actually right here in west Jersey, along the Delaware River! Have you driven Route 29?

Route 29, known as River Road in some spots along the way, is a scenic drive through western New Jersey that follows along the beautiful Delaware River.

The route starts in Trenton and begins with a bang as you travel through a tunnel into the historic district of the state’s capital.

As you continue along your journey, soon the city buildings give way to gorgeous scenery. For most of the route, the Delaware River peeks through the trees or appears in full view right next to the road.

There are a lot of scenic detours you can take along the way - one of the coolest is Baldpate Mountain at Ted Stiles Preserve.

The winding access road takes you to the summit, where you can have a picnic, listen for birds, spot wildflowers, and enjoy the view.

If you want to get out of the car and get your steps in, park at the lot at the bottom of the long, winding driveway and take the Blue Trail up to the summit. It’s a fun, short hike that takes you about 3 miles, round-trip.
