From Kauai to Hawaii Island and everywhere in between, the Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the country’s most charming small towns – including a Lilo and Stitch town! Located on the southern coast of Kauai between Waimea and Koloa is Hanapepe, one of the islands’ best-kept secrets. Hanapepe also has a pretty cool claim to fame: it served as the inspiration for the fictional town in the 2002 Disney classic Lilo and Stitch. Read on to discover all of the charming details.

Serving as the inspiration for Kokaua, the fictional hometown of the main characters in the Disney animated film, Lilo & Stitch, as well as its related franchise, Hanapepe is a gem.

This little beach town is home to 2,600 residents and is often referred to as “Kauai’s Biggest Little Town.”

Once one of Kauai’s largest communities, you may find that not much has changed over the last century in Hanapepe.

Its historic, plantation-style buildings are now home to charming shops, eateries, and a surprising amount of art galleries, and you’ll want to explore all day.

True Disney fans will want to make an effort to check out — and photograph — the Lilo & Stitch-inspired mural found off the main road, on the side of the abandoned Aloha Theater.

While you might be disappointed to not find Lilo or Stitch hanging out in this small Hawaiian town, we like that Hanapepe hasn’t capitalized on its Disney fame. Just because you can’t tour the real-life Lilo and Stitch house doesn’t mean Hanapepe isn’t worth visiting!

While it’s not touristy, tourists will love exploring Hanapepe. The charm of this sleepy, historic town is in its authenticity — and perhaps its most famous attraction, the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge, pictured below.

This charming little town is home to everything your heart desires and is the perfect place for your next weekend getaway — especially if Lilo & Stitch is your favorite film based in Hawaii (sorry, Moana!).

Lilo and Stitch Town August 10, 2022 Katie Lawrence What are the most charming small towns in Hawaii? If you’re in search of the most charming small towns in Hawaii to explore, Lanai City is certainly a top contender. The sole town on the island of Lanai, this historic plantation village is perched nearly 2,000 feet above sea level and features a population of around 3,200. Lanai City dates to 1924, and its old-fashioned charm is what keeps tourists coming back again and again. Another of our favorite small towns in Hawaii is Hanalei, located on Kauai. The only way into town is via a small, one-lane bridge, and there are lots of eclectic dining and shopping options to enjoy. What is the most beautiful small town in Hawaii? All of Hawaii is naturally beautiful, but certain areas definitely outshine others. Perhaps the most beautiful small town in Hawaii, Hale’iwa is nestled on the north shore of Oahu and has a population of just under 4,000. This relaxed beach town offers some of the best surfing in the state, but even if you aren’t looking to hang ten, it’s worthy of a getaway. Also in Hale’iwa, you will find art galleries, shops, incredible restaurants, and absolutely gorgeous views. This artsy town is worth stealing away to for a weekend next time you’re in Hawaii! What are the friendliest towns in Hawaii? Are you in need of a little cheer? Turn your frown upside down when you visit Makawao Town, one of the friendliest towns in Hawaii. Located on Maui, this quaint cowboy town is known for its annual Fourth of July Rodeo, where you can watch Hawaiian cowboys — also known as Paniolo — perform stunts such as barrel racing, calf roping, and bronco riding. Makawao Town also boasts gorgeous hiking trails, art galleries, and a century-old bakery that many believe to be the best in all of Hawaii.
