The South Carolina Sandhills swipe through the central part of the state in a diagonal fashion moving south from east to west. It’s a geologic wonder that all this sand is sitting in a path that virtually follows the coastline – but at least a hundred miles inland in some places. Geologists believe the sand was moved here by wind during the last glaciation about 75,000 to 6,000 years ago. It’s truly a sight to see and one place to get a good feel for life in the Sandhills is Cheraw State Park in Cheraw.
The park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and opened in 1934.

But don’t think for a minute that the State of South Carolina has skimped on upgrades, additions, and renovations over the decades since it opened. The cabins, alone, are testament to that!

For those who prefer to camp, there are sites that can accommodate anything from tents up to a 40-foot RV, sites that are boat-in only, and a primitive group site as well.

Along the shores of Lake Juniper, visitors can bask in the sun on the natural sand beach.

Speaking of kayaks, paddle fans will love exploring the waterlogged cypress forest on the far side of the lake.

The park also features seven miles of hiking trails including the one-half-mile boardwalk that follows along the lake and connects the Visitor Center/Camp Store with the campground areas.
