Osprey Trail can be found west of Rapid City, South Dakota, on the western side of the state. This 2.8-mile loop trail is located in the Black Hills National Forest and features incredible views of Pactola Lake.

Osprey Trail was named for the many ospreys that can be seen in the area. If you get lucky, you may be able to see some Osprey hunting for fish from the overlook!

Your dogs are also welcome, but they must be kept on a leash. Your best friend will love this hike with lots of new scents as you travel through meadows and forests.

The overlook over Pactola Lake is the perfect place to stop for a snack or lunch. There is a bench high up on the overlook, perfect for eating and gazing out over the water at the little islands, or, if you want to eat closer to the water, there is a bench closer to the shore.

The trail is open year-round, but be sure you have the right gear if you venture out during the winter as there can be heavy snow!

South Dakota may not be the first state you think of when you think of scenic views, but this hike should change that! Whether you are looking for a quick hike just to get outside, or you want to spend the afternoon on the overlook watching osprey and eagles fishing in the lake, Osprey Trail should be at the top of your list.
