When you think of swamplands or bayous, the southeastern United States may come to mind, and certainly not Illinois. Located in the southernmost part of the state lies the wetlands of the Cache River, a swampy area filled with large, ancient cypress trees reminiscent of what you might see in the deep south instead. It’s quite amazing how a place like this exists in the Midwest. So, how did this natural wonder in Illinois come to be? Let’s take a look:

Long ago, the Ohio RIver’s glacial floodwater carved out a flood plain which is the Cache River State Natural Area. It covers an expanse of 14,960 acres.

One of the most awe-inspiring natural features throughout the Cache River wetlands is the ancient cypress trees. Many of the trees are nearly 1,000 years old.

The bases of the cypress trees, called buttresses, are quite massive. Some have a circumference of over 40 feet!
