Raymond was chartered in 1830, making it one of the oldest cities in the state. Home to under 2,000 residents, Raymond is teeming with history, gorgeous structures from the past and enough small town charm to make you instantly fall in love with the place.
Just like many small southern towns, Raymond has a charming town square full of quaint shops, including the old Raymond Depot Building, which has been transformed into a music memorabilia shop.

The depot once served the Little J Railroad, which traveled from Natchez to Jackson. Constructed in approximately 1889, the building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Remnants of the past can be found all over Raymond. One example is the old Illinois Central Gulf caboose that is on display behind the depot.

The city is also home to the Raymond Military Park, which commemorates the May 12th 1863 Battle of Raymond. The battlefield spans over 100 acres and includes walking trails, informative kiosks, monuments, canons, interpretive signage and reenactments.

The courthouse in Raymond is one of the town’s most impressive sites. In fact, it was recognized by Smithsonian as one of the ten “most perfect examples of southern architecture.”

Across the street from the courthouse is St. Marks Episcopal Church – the oldest structure in Raymond. Following the Battle of Raymond, injured soldiers were treated in this church, and according to reports, bloodstains are still visible on the church’s wood floors.

The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church is also located in Raymond. The structure has long been known for its architectural elegance and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

And those aren’t the only pieces of impressive architecture you’ll find in Raymond. The city is also home to a castle. (Yes, that’s right; a castle.) The gorgeous Castle of Raymond is available to rent for special occasions.

Another great aspect about Raymond is its location. The town is located just three miles from the Natchez Trace Parkway and isn’t far from the renowned Windsor Ruins.

And don’t forget the food. Raymond is home to several locally owned restaurants sure to satisfy your taste buds. One popular eatery is Sylvester’s Mississippi Style Barbecue, which is known for serving up some of the best barbecue around.
