Did you know one of the most popular swimming holes in Arizona started off as something entirely different? Slide Rock State Park, beloved for its 80-foot-long natural waterslide, was originally an apple orchard and homestead built in the early 1900s. You can still see the original farmland and several historic cabins, plus (of course) try your hand at plunging down the slide.
Slide Rock State Park is one of the most popular warm-weather destinations in Arizona, but it hasn’t always been a place to go swimming.

Originally, the park was a 43-acre apple orchard and homestead that belonged to Frank L. Pendley, one of Oak Creek Canyon’s earliest pioneers.

In the early 1930s, Pendlay began hosting visitors in cabins he built by hand, but the Arizona State Parks Board didn’t acquire the property until 1985.

The state park opened to the public in 1987, and it became a hit almost immediately.

Visitors of all ages have a blast plunging down the 80-foot-long natural waterslide after which the park is named. A layer of algae at the bottom keeps you slipping and sliding all the way to the end, and you’ll promptly get back in line for another go-round.

The slide feeds into a large swimming hole with plenty of space for parkgoers to spread out. Soak in the crystal-clear water for as long as your heart desires, then dry off and explore all there is to see on land.

Although Slide Rock is the main attraction, there are also three short hiking trails worth checking out. One leads to the swimming area, another boasts sweeping views of the park, and still another takes you to the historic Pendley Homestead.

This last trail, the Pendley Homestead Trail, is only a quarter-mile long, but it showcases the original apple orchards, Pendley Homestead house, farming equipment, and so many more fascinating pieces of the past.
