All bias aside, New York is one of the most scenic states in the country for hiking, exploring, and drinking in breathtaking views. Whether you’re on the hunt for an urban hike near NYC, a challenging multi-day climb upstate, relaxing lakeside scenery, or expansive valley views, you can find them all right here.

But there’s something extra magical about journeys that yield up their gorgeous rewards easily (i.e. without the grueling 25-mile backpacking trip). If you’re looking for a sweet trail that offers up a small taste of just about everything that New York has to offer, a hike on Mary’s Glen Trail might just fit the bill! This gentle ascent is perfect for hikers of all skill levels, and definitely one of the most scenic loop trails in the entire state. Lace up those boots, and let’s go for an adventure!

While the Empire State has no shortage of incredible sights or trails, Mary’s Glen showcases some of the best and most varied terrain that New York has to offer:

The prime version of the loop starts just a few feet from the gorgeous North Lake Beach parking area in the Catskill Forest Preserve, and leads to a multitude of iconic spots such as Artists Rock, Sunset Rock, and Newman’s Ledge.

However, one of the best parts of this loop (besides the scenery!) is the opportunity to create your own adventure and make the journey as long as you like.

If time or stamina isn’t on your side, you can make this into a two-mile loop hike by veering to the left and following a portion of the longer Escarpment Trail.

If you’re feeling ambitious or want to break away from the loop to explore some side trails, there are plenty of add-on options, such as the incredible views at North Point, or even the old Catskill Mountain House.

Trails are marked with signage and colored dots to help keep you moving in the right direction. You’ll be following yellow for this adventure!

While the Mary’s Glen loop is by no means a leisurely stroll through a city park, it’s definitely doable for nearly all ages and abilities. You’ll only gain around 1,000 feet of elevation roundtrip.

Sheri Rullson/AllTrails Although as with all mountain hikes, you’ll want to keep any little ones safely away from ledges. Also note that this is a true mountain hike - not a paved trail. Rocks, some easy scrambles, roots, and more add excitement to the journey.

The Hudson Valley is made for hiking, don’t you think?  Bonus: If your dog is on a leash, they can appreciate the scenic views here too! Keep in mind that the trails and rocks can be slippery in the spring and after rainfall – take appropriate precautions and stay safe.
