Wildflowers add bursts of vibrant color to the landscape during Missouri’s warmer months. While we can usually admire the colorful flowers in all corners of the state, we can never go wrong with setting off on a scenic hike for an up-close view. You won’t have to do too much hunting when you follow the Wildflower Trail at Mastodon State Historic Site in Imperial.

The wandering trail, which tallies just over a half of a mile, is brimming with colorful wildflowers in the warmer months. Still, it’s a fun and easy hike no matter what time of the year you set off.

While the trail is rated easy, you will have to deal with some varied terrain, including several sets of stairs and uphill climbs. Comfortable, sturdy shoes or hiking boots are recommended. Take care if you’re hiking after a rainfall as the stairs can be slippery.

If you set off on the trail in the early morning, you may have it all to yourself. However, some hikers warn that you might also run into spider webs at that time of the day.

Begin the trail at the Visitor Center, where you’ll come to the stairs. The trail will lead you past vibrant wildflowers during the warmer months and to a scenic bluff.

The Mastodon State Historic Site is home to the Kimmswick Bone Bed, to which the Wildflower Trail leads. (Even if you don’t go when the wildflowers are in bloom, you’ll still have plenty to see.)
