Lamy was named after Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy. The community began as a flourishing railroad town in the 1880s.

You can visit the Lamy Railroad and History Museum inside the “Legal Tender” building in Lamy. This railroad and museum are on the National Register of Historic Places.
