When it comes to Louisiana desserts, the beignet reigns supreme (at least until King Cake season rolls around). Dusted with powdered sugar and served fresh out of the fryer, these delicate puffs of perfection are always a tasty treat. There’s one restaurant in Louisiana that took this iconic sweet and made a savory spin to it, and you need to try it.

You’ll find La Petite Grocery on historic Magazine Street in New Orleans.

JK Ames/Google Like so many restaurants in Louisiana, this one comes with a unique history.

Why the name? Well, it’s a reminder of how the building came to be.

La Petite Grocery/Facebook In the late 1800s, the space was a grocery store names Central Tea, Coffee, and Butter Depot selling exactly what you would think: exotic teas from around the globe as well as coffee and butter. The store was very successful until a fire in 1908 completely devastated the building (and about two square miles around it). Like so many Louisianians faced with a crushing blow like this, they decided to rebuild from scratch.

The result was a brand new store with all the bells and whistles to make the store, renamed Frank W. Mackie Grocer, a huge success.

Alicia M./Google The new store was a full-service grocery store complete with a barn to house horses and delivery carriages. No other store during that time offered what this one did, and it’s one of the main reasons it continued for a successful run for many, many years

In 2004, La Petite Grocery opened its doors, paying homage to the history of the building with a name that reflects its roots.

Charles Dickerson/Google From the moment you step inside, you’ll feel the history of the space. It’s as warm and welcoming as you’d think!

The menu features a wide array of options, ranging from shellfish stew to roasted lamb T-Bones.

Scott Sulik/Google They also have one of the best burgers in town, the LPG Burger.

No matter what you get for your main dish, be sure to order the signature appetizer: the blue crab beignets.

La Petite Grocery/Facebook Take what you think you know about beignets and throw it out the window.

These blue crab beignets take the best parts of a crab cake and a beignet and combine them for a flavor you didn’t even know you needed.

La Petite Grocery/Facebook The dish is served with malt vinegar aioli and lemon. You’ll find it hard to share these bad boys.

Whether you dine for lunch, dinner, or a weekend brunch, these crab beignets don’t last long on the table.

Speaking of brunch, the Bloody Marys at La Petite Grocery are one-of-a-kind.

Amy Vanzo/Google Just look at that masterpiece! These tasty beverages are a meal of their own. Beignets and Bloody Marys, anyone?

Be sure to visit the La Petite Grocery website for a full menu, and don’t forget to give them a follow on Facebook so you never miss out on any new creations.
