Calling all explorers! Although Maryland is filled with lengthy hikes, there are also shorter treks that are just as beautiful. The following trail is less than a half mile in length and leads to a waterfall! Bring the family on this short and sweet hike that makes for a memorable local day trip among nature.

Patapsco Valley State Park covers a massive 32 miles in Maryland, sprawling parts of both Howard County and Baltimore County. Today, we’re featuring the area near Elkridge.

This spot is known as the Avalon area. Most people head here to see the swinging bridge that crosses the scenic Patapsco River.

This spot is also home to Cascade Falls Trail. Although you can take lengthier routes to get to the waterfall, the journey from this spot is short (although rocky).

The trek is only a quarter mile, but the path is not smooth. Strollers are not recommended.

At the end, you’ll reach Cascade Falls, which is a beautiful place to visit year-round…

…although during warmer months, you’ll often find folks dipping their feet in the water. It’s a nice little spot for the kids to splash around for a while, or to simply take in the scenery while you munch on a picnic lunch.
