It’s no wonder the Artist’s Bluff Trail in Franconia, New Hampshire, was named as such; during the fall the foliage looks like it’s been painted onto the landscape by a true artistic master. For decades painters and photographers have flocked to this natural haven for inspiration and visual stimulation.
This easy 1.5-mile loop trail takes you by Bald Mountain and up to Artist’s Bluff, where you can see some of the best views of the surrounding landscape in the area.

Previous hikers say that the view at the top of the bluff is well-worth the short hike. Many recommend visiting during fall for that extra spectacular foliage.
Anyssa Pion / AllTrails Those with small children or animals with them should exercise caution at the top because it’s a sharp drop down the cliff of the bluff.
While formerly this trail may have been beloved by artists who painted or sketched the landscape, it has now been discovered by contemporary creatives and their Instagrams. It’s recommended you visit early to avoid crowds, unless you’d like your own photographs to include a cast of extra characters.

No camping is allowed on this beautiful summit, but Lafayette Campground in Franconia State Park nearby accepts travelers before or after they’ve taken in the stunning scenery. Spending a little more time in the natural world after this experience provides a space for quiet reflection.

While enjoying the view, pay particular attention to Echo Lake at the center of the valley. Next to the bright foliage it shines a clear and beautiful blue.
