But there’s far more to this sprawling park than a great view. A woodland hike takes visitors to a Wisconsin cave that’s spectacular in its own right. Wyalusing State Park is located in far western Wisconsin, at the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers. It’s located in the town of Wyalusing, just south of Prairie du Chien.

The park has a long and storied history. Wyalusing means “home of the warrior” in the Lenape language spoken by Munsee-Delaware tribes who moved here in the 1800s after being displaced from lands out east. Native American mounds in the park reflect an even longer history.

Today, the park is a destination for visitors seeking to explore one one of the state’s most beautiful spots. The park has 500-foot bluffs and myriad lookouts that offer sweeping views of the river valley below.

There are many scenic loop trails worth exploring, but one of the best is the Sugar Maple Trail. The hike covers less than two miles but it will take you to a wonderful site.

The trail will take you straight to Pictured Rocks Cave, a limestone cave that’s topped with a small waterfall. It’s not a cave that will take you below ground, but it is a tranquil place where you can pause and listen to the gentle sound of falling waters and reflect on the beauty of this special park.

The park is open all year – use caution and use appropriate footgear. Use caution in the winter, as the trail can get a little icy and in the spring the trail can become muddy.
