It’s the most beautiful time of year for hiking in Maryland. Much of the state is covered in vibrant fall foliage and you may have thought about an outdoorsy adventure. One of the prettiest spots this time of year is the C & O Canal — especially the Paw Paw Tunnel area. Read on to learn more about this historic and scenic spot.
The C & O Canal towpath stretches for 184.5 miles, from Washington DC to Cumberland, Maryland.

You can walk, jog, or cycle any section along this route for scenic views. The autumn foliage enhances the sights further.

When you arrive in the Oldtown area, you’ll spot this stone structure known as Paw Paw Tunnel.

Construction on the tunnel began all the way back in 1836 and took a whopping 14 years to complete. It finally opened in 1850.

You can walk through the 3,118-foot tunnel but be sure to bring a flashlight – it’s very dark and some say it’s haunted.
