Oklahoma’s diverse topography makes it very popular for different hiking excursions. Most people are surprised to learn that the state actually draws in thousands of visitors every year from around the country for our great hiking trails. With thousands of miles of trails to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide which trail you want to explore. If you’re looking for an epic trail to visit this spring, head to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, home to over 15 miles of designated hiking trails. They are all beautiful but we found one that you’ll want to explore now for a truly magical spring season.
The Crab Eyes Trail in the Wichita Mountains is a 4-mile out and back trail that is rated as moderate. You will begin at the Charon’s Garden Trailhead then when you see this sign, follow it to Crab Eyes.

The trail takes about 1.5 hours to complete and offers everything from cliff views to open fields and it’s absolutely gorgeous. Curious about the silly name? At the end of the trail, there are some boulders that resemble what “crab eyes” look like.

The best time to hike this trail is from April to September. During these months you’ll see many flowers in bloom and it will take your breath away.

During the hike on Crab Eyes Trail, you’ll come to the base of the rock formations. You can hike up further but it’s a more difficult climb and not part of the marked trail.

This hike is so beautiful in the spring when the weather is nice and before the mosquitoes have a chance to really overtake the great outdoors. Along the path, you’ll also pass by some lovely water sources and lush greenery.

The area is also full of different wildflowers including the Indian Blanket, the official wildflower of Oklahoma. Plus, there are fields and fields of coreopsis wildflowers that are breathtakingly beautiful in the spring and summer.
